CDPR’s Official Gwent Challenger Tournament Announced!

Looks like Gwent is going to get it’s first official CDPR Tournament in April! The Gwent Challenger Tournament will include open qualifiers which will determine the four players that will get a chance to compete in the Main Event with four pro players. These pro players are: Trump, LifeCoach, ppd, and Noxious.

Quick Information

  • Not everyone who signs up will participate in the tournament. After the closing of the sign-up period, the highest ranked 256 players from each division on GWENT’s leaderboard will be selected to participate in the Day 1 qualifiers, as long as they have applied correctly.
  • The Open Qualifiers will take place across one weekend on the 8-9 April 2017. The ‘Temeria’ Open Qualifiers will take place at 12pm PST and the ‘Redania’ Open Qualifiers will take place at 12pm GMT on each day.
  • There will be 256 places available in each Open Qualifier. This means there are 512 places available in total across both the ‘Temeria’ and ‘Redania’ Open Qualifiers.
  • The Main Event will take place on 13 May 2017 at ESL Arena in Katowice, Zeliwna 38, Poland.
  • The prizes are: first place prize is $60,000; second place prize is $20,000; and the third and fourth place prize is $10,000 each.
  • The Main Event will be an eight-player tournament; four professional esports players (“Pro Players ”) and the four Qualifying Players.

The official announcement is below, but be sure to check out the full information on the tournament here, and the official rules here.

We’re excited to announce GWENT Challenger — an official GWENT: The Witcher Card Game tournament organized in partnership with ESL.

The tournament will pit 4 best players from the community against professional gamers: Trump (Jeffrey Shih), Lifecoach (Adrian Koy), Noxious (Kacem Khilaji) and ppd (Peter Dager). GWENT Challenger finalists will compete for a total prize pool of $100,000.

“It’s a real privilege to observe how active GWENT players are in the realm of competitive gaming. Community-powered tournaments like The Passiflora Championship, The Seven Cats Brawl or The Gwentlemen’s Open are a source of inspiration for the entire team, and we definitely want this part of GWENT to grow,” said Paweł Burza, Community Manager, CD PROJEKT RED.

“GWENT: The Witcher Card Game was created because The Witcher community wanted it. Now we’re seeing more and more gamers wanting to play GWENT competitively, so here we are with a chance to play against some heavy-hitters, and a prize pool to spice things up,” said Marcin Iwiński, Co-founder, CD PROJEKT RED. “I can’t wait to see who wins!” Iwiński adds.

Registrations for GWENT Challenger Qualifiers, a detailed rule set, tournament roadmap and FAQ are all available on the official website.

Gwent Closed Beta Live Stream Today at 9pm CET!

Another Gwent Closed Beta Live Stream is coming today at 9pm CET! They will be discussing upcoming updates (likely the positioning changes), and playing live matches. Check out all the action on CDPR’s Twitch Channel. Here’s a countdown clock if you are in another time zone (H/T: ghostgnome).

Join us live on Tuesday, March 14th, at 9PM CET (12PM PST) on the CD PROJEKT RED Twitch channel! We’ll be playing live matches with the community and talking about the changes and new features introduced with the latest update! As always we’ll be answering your questions, so be sure to stop by!

Upcoming Gwent Patch Will Enable Card Positioning!

A NDA recently came up which allowed KingBlackToof to discuss a significant change coming soon to Gwent! You will soon be able to position cards on the board. Currently whenever you play a card to the board it goes to the right of whichever card is already on that row. When this patch is enabled you will be able to put it to the left, right, or in-between cards already on the board. You will still, however, be constrained by the card’s row e.g., Melee, Ranged, or Siege.

Check out KingBlackToof’s video below which goes more in-depth on the upcoming change.

Gwent Closed Beta to Open Beta Transition Information

Gwent Open Beta shouldn’t be too far away, so CDPR has released information on how that transition will take place on the official Gwent site. No official date for the Open Beta has been released.

We’ve been in Closed Beta for quite a while now, and we are preparing for the next stage — Open Beta. This is why we’d like to tell you a bit more about how we plan to transition into Open Beta, and what that means for your in-game progress. We’d also like to tell you more about what you’re going to receive for your participation.

Many things have changed since we launched the Closed Beta of GWENT — we’ve introduced dozens of balance tweaks, added new mechanics, new premium versions of cards, implemented a ranking mode, and more.

Since Open Beta will mark a significant influx of new players, we want everyone to start on equal ground. That’s why we need to reset everyone’s card collection (fear not — we’ll give you back all the Kegs you purchased with real money!) and game progress (player level, Ore and Scraps).

However, we also want to reward you for the time you invested in helping us make GWENT better. And this means you’ll get to smash open some shiny new Kegs. Chances are, a lot!

Here’s what you’ll get:

  • Every Card Keg you purchased — we will return you the amount of Kegs you bought with real money.
  • Card Kegs for Player Levels — starting from level 5, you get 2 Kegs every 5 levels.
  • Card Kegs for your rank — 2 Kegs for each rank.
  • All end-season rewards.
  • All items granted as gifts from CD PROJEKT RED (like the gift premium Geralt card).

All in all, after everything’s done, you should have enough Kegs to make new great decks! Once again thank you for playing GWENT and making it better. We really appreciate it.

Nilfgaard Cards Revealed – Nilfgaard Patch to be Released on February 6th, 2017

Nilfgaard cards were revealed via a developer’s build to certain Gwent content creators. I’ve included videos below. The Nilfgaard content patch has been announced to be released on February 6th, 2017.

We would like to announce the upcoming arrival of a new playable faction in GWENT: The Witcher Card Game — Nilfgaard.

Part of a major content update for the game, Nilfgaard introduces a playstyle focused on maintaining control over the battlefield. The faction equips players with a set of new gameplay mechanics such as revealing cards in the opponent’s hand, controlling the order of cards in player decks, and trickery based on the use of disloyal units.

The update expands the number of cards available in the game by over 60 — new additions also include faction-specific cards for Northern Realms, Scoia’tael, Skellige and Monsters, as well as neutral cards usable by every faction.

The content update introducing Nilfgaard is scheduled for release on February 6th, 2017.

Nilfgaard Update Patch Livestream: February 1st, 2017

We’re finally going to get a look at the Nilfgaard faction. Along with this we’ll be finding out what’s going to be updated in the next patch. There was a bit of controversy over the last livestream, because a lot of people were under the impression that Nilfgaard was going to be revealed. It turned out that it was more of a stream to feature some Gwent content creators. We did, however, learn what the Nilfgaard faction ability is going to be:

KingBlackToof also revealed what one of the leader’s of Nilfgaard will be:

Emhyr Var Emreis – Reveal 2 cards in your opponent’s Hand.

Here’s the official live stream information:

Join us live February 1st, at 12PM PST (9pm CET) on the CD PROJEKT RED Twitch channel to check out some of the changes that will be implemented with the Nilfgaard Update.

We’ll go over the patch notes, talk about the new cards, and build a brand new Nilfgaard deck!

Paweł Burza
Michał ‘Luigi’ Dobrowolski

Note: The stream will be in English

See you there!

New Cards

Geralt: Aard – When you play Geralt: Aard you can choose a row on your opponent’s side, and it will move all of the units to the higher row, and deal 1 damage to all of the units moved.

Kayran – It consumes three of your non-gold cards and inherits their power.

Coral – You select a row on your side of the board, and it will move all of your units to the row that Coral was played on.

Schirru – New ambush card. It’s played face down, it’s triggered when a special card is played and changes it to a ScorchDestroy the strongest non-Gold unit(s) on the battlefield.. It might play another Scorch after that, but it’s unclear.

Leader Rarity Being Reduced to Epic from Legendary and New Patch Coming Soon!

It looks like we’re going to see a few significant chances in the upcoming Gwent patch for Closed Beta. One of those changes will be the changes to Leaders rarity from Legendary to Epic. This means you will be more likely to receive them in your Kegs. We will also be receiving 600 Scraps each for any non-starting Leaders in our collections! On top of that, they are throwing in a free Keg for everyone. Sounds like a pretty sweet update!

Since we’re changing the rarity of Leaders from legendary to Epic (a big deal!), you will get 600 scraps each for any non-starter Leaders in your collection (to make up the difference in crafting price). Official FAQ Information

We’re launching the event on PC only.

No, it does not. Participating in KtS! does not grant you access to the Closed Beta — although you do need to be signed up for the Closed Beta to be able to apply for KtS! Access. In short, Closed Beta and KtS! are two different things. But don’t worry if you don’t manage to get into KtS!, the Closed Beta will have plenty of spots for everyone.

No, the number of keys is limited — access will be granted based on a first come, first served basis. We will publish exact hours of code distribution via our social media (Twitter and Facebook).

The event takes place this Friday, 23.09 from 5PM to 9PM CEST and Tuesday, 27.09 from 8PM to 12AM CEST.

No, KtS! is a stress test event and we’re not planning to enable deck building functionality for its duration.

As players will have no possibility of deck creation or level progressing during KtS!, we plan no data wipes (there will simply be nothing to erase).

After KtS! concludes, the test game will be removed from your shelf. No worries though, Closed Beta is coming soon, so there will be plenty of opportunities to play!
